Black Ink is Graphic Design
The first printed books introduced us all to black and white illustration. Etchings gave way to illustration in pen and ink. Later comic book art, graphic novels, animation and digital media showed us how far illustration could go. The core of all graphic drawing is black and white artwork. It is naturally eye catching and has a built in clarity and high contrast. I have always loved the ease of communication and print media applications of black and white work. It can go from a simple line drawing to a sophisticated illustration.
Typography and Design
Typography and graphic illustration have a lot in common. The art in both disciplines aren't just the character or the drawing. The design principles of texture, positive-negative space, line and shape relationships, implied shapes , composition, attraction and depth all are part of a beautiful typeface or a fascinating illustration. Strong conceptual and design principles show through in an excellent typographic piece of artwork.
